Once the doubles phase of the Caribbean Region Junior Table Tennis Championship was completed on Friday at the National Indoor Gymnasium in Guyana, the Trinidad and Tobago junior table tennis team added two silver and four bronze medals to their total.
Alexander Perez and Tejada Alexander of the Dominican Republic defeated Malik Gopaul and Gabriel John 3-1 (4:11; 14:12; 11:7; 11:9) in the Boys U-15 championship match. In a thrilling matchup against Jamaicans Brian Blake and Gari Wythe in the semifinals, the TT team prevailed 3-2 (9:11; 11:8; 9:11; 11:7; 12:10).
Arianna Estrella and Dafna Sosa of the Dominican Republic defeated Chloe Fraser and Jordan Thong of France 3-1 (11:13; 8:11; 11:5; 11:6) in the Girls U-15 doubles final.
Fraser and Thong defeated the Guyana team of Jasmine Billingy and Samara Sukhai 3-1 to advance to the final (11:4; 11:4; 7:11; 11:9). Estrella/Sosa defeated TT’s Lyllana Boodhan/Jinai Samuel 3-0 in the other semi-final game (11:4;11:3;11:2).
In the Girls U-19 doubles, Piryanka Khellawan and Imani Edwards-Taylor won the bronze medal. The duo was defeated in straight sets by Shary Munoz/Cinthia Pena of the Dominican Republic (11:7; 11:4; 11:8).
Both the mixed U-15 doubles pair of Malik Gopaul and Chloe Fraser and the under-19 team of Nicholas O’Young and Khellawan won bronze for TT.
The singles categories will be finished on Saturday, bringing TT’s total of medals to 10 (five silver, five bronze). The teams are expected to add more silverware as several players are already into the knockout round.
