The National Classified Championships 2023 was the biggest tournament since COVID 19, a health outbreak which had formed a mist of uncertainty over table tennis and Sport in general. This first major table tennis tournament of 2023 produced 176 entries inclusive of 31 ladies in A1, A2, B, C and a new novice category which was contested over the weekend of 15th and 16th April. Even though there should still be care the heavy mist has lifted.
Over the two days more than 1000 persons would have passed through the doors of Eastern Regional Sporting Complex as many players returned to the Sport that worldwide is second only to football and for longevity is second to none. It was a thrill to see a full head table of officials, parents and families flock to the facility.
On Saturday when the Novice, C and B divisions were played, it was pleasing to see National coaches and former national players and coaches sharing advice and encouragement to young players, many making their debut. This certainly augers well for the future since children as young as seven years old were demonstrating their skill and enthusiasm supported by their full families. Table tennis is certainly deserving of their own venue to daily develop youngsters of all ages.
