The men’s table tennis team from Trinidad and Tobago was unable to advance to the semi-finals of the 63rd Caribbean Regional Table Tennis Federation (CRTTF) Championships in Guyana’s National Indoor Gymnasium.
TT lost 3-1 against Barbados in the quarterfinal, forfeiting a medal that seemed a lock.
Aaron Wilson and Derron Douglas of TT defeated Marcus Smith and Mark Dowell in the opening match 3-1 (13:11; 7:11; 8:11; 2:11) but were unsuccessful in the singles.
Just before Dowell’s 3-1 upset of Wilson, Tyrese Knight defeated Yuvraaj Dookram 3-1 (9:11; 11:2; 11:7; 13:11). (11:6; 11:9; 2:11; 12:10). Douglas was defeated 3-0 by Knight (11:5, 12:10, and 11:6) to conclude the match.
On Saturday at 11 am, Barbados will play the favorite Cuba in the semifinals. This was the last chance for the TT contingent to secure a medal at the Championships.
The TT men competed well in the group round but lost to the Dominican Republic 3-0 on Thursday. However, they bounced back the following day with a 3-1 victory against St. Lucia to finish second in the group and advance to the quarterfinal round.
The women of TT were placed in a difficult group with Cuba and the Dominican Republic. Dominican Republic defeated the women 3-0. Idalys Lovet/Lizdainet Rodriguez won 3-0 (3:11; 2:11; 8:11) over Imani Edwards-Taylor/Priyanka Khellawan.
Chloe Fraser was defeated 3-1 by Estela Crespo of the Dominican Republic (11:5; 10:12; 11:6; 11:9). Rodriguez then defeated Khellawan 3-0 to end the contest (11:6; 11:6; 11:3).
The four TT players lost in the round of 16 in the single events.
Aaron Wilson beat St. Lucian Dawitt Nurse 4-0 in the previous round (11:5; 11:1; 11:4; 11:6). The Carenage Blasters player, however, was later defeated 4-0 by Barbadian Tyrese Knight (6:11; 4:11; 7:11; 8:11).
Derron Douglas of Tobago had to work hard to defeat Barbadian Marcus Smith 4-3 (8:11; 11:2; 11:7; 9:11; 11:4; 9:11; 11:7), but Oscar Birriel of Puerto Rico overpowered the US-based competitor 4-0 (6:11; 11:13; 9:11; 9:11).
Chloe Fraser of France lost to eventual women’s singles champion Daniela Carrazana Fonseca of Cuba 4-0 (11:7; 11:6; 11:5; 11:6). Priyanka Khellawan competed admirably against Shary Munoz of the Dominican Republic, who won the silver medal in the competition. The 17-year-old fell short of 4-2 (11:9; 3:11; 14:12; 6:11; 4:11; 2:11).
