After a five-year hiatus, Yuvraaj Dookram will compete in the senior Caribbean Table Tennis Championships (March 20–26) and the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games qualifiers (March 16–19) in Guyana.

Following the delegation’s departure on Thursday afternoon, the Trinidad and Tobago Table Tennis Association (TTTTA) named the squad on Wednesday. At the games in San Salvador, El Salvador in June, the top 8 teams in the CAC Qualifiers will advance.

Dookram is in excellent shape, having won back-to-back silver medals in the two local Super Sunday Series competitions and been named the league’s Most Valuable Player in the most recent season. Dookram will compete with colleagues Derron Douglas and Aaron Wilson. Wilson, who is 24 years old, has been a senior player for more than ten years and has played professionally in Europe. The group will rely on his knowledge in addition to Douglas, who is stationed in the US and attending Texas Wesleyan University on a scholarship.

Dookram changed his strategy for getting ready for the competitions. I’m glad to be back on the national team, he declared. A few months ago, I was behind a lot and knew I would need to put in extra work to regain some form to compete with the current players. Since joining Queens Park Cricket Club, I have been training regularly and had a programme in place with the help of the coach Aaron Edwards and good sparring with top young players as well as Guyanese player Shemar Britton.”

“The key objectives for the future competitions are to finish top 8 in the CAC Qualifiers and strive to medal in the Caribbean Championships team events,” the 33-year-old continued. We are aware that we must compete and give our all since there are some really good teams in the competition, but I think we can win a medal in the team events.

One of the newest senior teams to ever be chosen to represent the twin-island nation is the women’s squad. Imani Edwards- Taylor and Priyanka Khellawan, two junior players, are both 17 years old, while Chloe Fraser, a player residing in France, is 14 years old. By volunteering to represent her nation, Taylor has shown incredible resolve and fortitude.

On March 8, her grandma Verna Edwards passed away. She was one of the inspirations for her decision to take up table tennis.

After being just elected on January 22, the TTTTA executive faced the impossible task of assembling a team, raising money, and choosing a team to participate at the championships. They are now self-financing the tour in the hopes of being reimbursed once money has been granted by sponsors and the government.
